Upon this Rock I will built my church

Matthew 16:18  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in Heaven.

My definition of the Lord calling Peter a "Rock".

Peter did not have a fleshy mind set, easily  influenced by the urges of the lusty spirits of the flesh that can enter the body and seduce the body.    a  ROCK doesn't want

John 21:14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

John 21:15  So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

Note: the Lord's lambs are the very young men that show their love for the Lord by striving to be priests, and to pastor, by effort and patience to fellow him.

John 21:16  He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

John 21:17   He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Mat 16:18  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Comment:  I would have to say the church that was build on the "Rock" Peter stopped existing sometime after Peter's demise.  Reason being: Verse Act 20:29 explains why.

Act: 20:29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

Act 20:30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

On a personal level the Gates of Hell are the Body Orifices, eyes, mouth, ears (what you are hearing, the groin, rear end, etc.  It doesn't have to be perversion: uncontrollable overeating, and what you are eating.

Jesus Christ is saying because the tempter

the devil will tempt you at his will from time to time.  Turning your orifices into "Gates of Hell".
